The friends were summering on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland in 1816, Shelley still unknown as a poet and Byron writing the third canto of Childe Harold. When continued rains kept them confined indoors, all agreed to Byrons proposal.The illustrious poets failed to complete their ghost stories, but Mary Shelley rose supremely to the challenge. About the Author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) fue la unica hija de William Godwin y Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, dos pensadores progresistas que se encargaron de introducirla en los ambientes intelectuales. Con apenas catorce años, conocio al joven poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley y huyo con el a Francia. Convivieron por algun tiempo y cuando se suicido la primera esposa del poeta, se casaron. El matrimonio, que duro ocho años, vivio en distintos paises y formo parte del circulo de poetas romanticos que frecuentaba lord Byron. A los veintiun años, Mary Shelley publico su primera novela, Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeo (1818), que obtuvo un gran exito. Tambien es autora de las novelas Lodore (1835), Falkner (1837) y la futurista El ultimo hombre (1826), que escenifica el fin de la civilizacion en el siglo XXI.
