All the major orchestral highlights from two Nordic giants, originating from several albums all receiving the highest acclaim from Gramophone. Peer Gynt, Finlandia, and other favourites are here combined with several lesser-known gems. The result is a disc full of orchestral majesty from these two signature composers. The majority of the selections are conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras - presiding over the New Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - in the full glow of his legendary abilities. Also contributing to the compilation are Mark Ermler conducting the RPO for the Peer Gynt suite; the Holberg Suite (First Movement) with Yuri Simonov leading the RPO; and Sibeliuss glorious tone poem The Swan of Tuonela with Ole Schmidt and the RPO with Geoffrey Brown delivering the solo on cor anglais.
