Titulo : Audio CD - THE ACME SESSIONS 1952/56 - CARTER FAMILY
UPC/EAN : 788065420123

We believe this is the first time these recordings have been comprehensively reissued. Transfers are by Chris King from discs in his collection. Maybelle was no longer a group member but Sara and A.P. were persuaded to reunite in the studio. The history of the original Carter Family Trio is widely available. Suffice it to say that by the time Ralph Peer held his Bristol, Tennessee auditions in 1927, the Carters (with APs sister-in-law Maybelle) were professionals. By 1933 AP and Sara had separated. Sara moved back to her Copper Creek birthplace. She went on to marry Coy Bays, a cousin of APs. By 1952 AP was settled in Maces Springs and Sara was in California. Businessman and hot-gospeller Clifford Spurlock convinced AP that he could sell new Carter recordings on his Acme label through the Sears catalogue. The attraction for AP was not just getting back on record but also the reunion of the family - his children Joe and Jeanette were to join him. Whether the Carters made money out of these sessions is not certain. They seem to have got nothing from Spurlock. The bulk of the Carters Acme output is religious/sacred, but there are plenty of the sides theyd originally cut in the 1920s and 30s. There was the odd new song like Railroading On The Great Divide, and The Titanic, a piece the original trio did not record. In the main the material compares well to their earlier work. A curiosity is Mrs Jimmie Rodgers Visits The Carter Family. The room in which they recorded was said to be where Jimmie and the Carter Family had made their initial recordings for Peer. It is clearly inspired by Jimmie Rodgers Visits the Carter Family made in 1931. The 1956 sessions were a last bow from AP who died on 7th November 1960. Joe and Janette would record again in the 1960s. Sara and Maybelle reunited and appeared at the Newport Folk Festival in 1967. The same year they cut an album for Columbia Records. Sara died on the 8th January 1979.
