For Georgian Britain, caricatures and cartoons occupied the place of the popular press and television today - graphic pictorial renderings of the flow of events, moods and fashions. Many late Georgian country houses contained print rooms, where engravings of works by Old Masters were pasted on the walls. But the Caricature Room at Calke Abbey is a very rare example. Nearly one hundred and fifty caricatures can be seen, dating from the 1790s through to the late 1820s. Many are by leading artists of the genre, including Thomas Rowlandson, James Gillray and George Cruikshank. Margaret Willes focuses on twenty of these images, and traces the stories behind them: the activities of the rich and famous, the perils of the latest fashions, traffic jams and scientific fads.
