In 1924, a British expedition attempted to summit Mount Everest from the north side. This was the third attempt for veteran climber George Leigh Mallory, and he chose an unlikely partner on summit day: 22-year-old "Sandy" Irvine, for whom this was his first try at a mountain reaching into the Death Zone. One of the team's other members spotted Mallory and Irvine at 12:50 p.m., headed for the top and going strong. That would have placed them on the summit in early evening - much too late to get back to their tent in the uppermost camp before dark. They never made it back, and no one knows even now whether or not they actually reached Everest's summit 29 years before Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
In 1999, a BBC-sponsored North Face expedition set out to find Mallory, Irvine, or both men, and hopefully to learn the truth about their summit attempt. The expedition found Mallory's body, and concluded that he fell on the way down. Irvine's ice axe had been found long before, but the younger man's body remains missing. So does the camera that Mallory borrowed from another climber, which means no one has yet been able to learn whether or not the duo used that camera to document reaching the top.
This nonfiction account provides plenty of background in its early chapters, and it gives a detailed account of the expedition that ended with Mallory and Irvine lost somewhere between their tent and the summit.
