The House with Green Shutters is a novel by Scottish author George Douglas Brown, first published in 1901. The novel describes the struggle of the proud and taciturn ferryman John Gourlay against the malicious comments and petty machinations of the envious and idle inhabitants of the village of Barbie (a fictional town based on the author's hometown, Ochiltree). The sudden return after a fifteen-year absence of ambitious merchant James Wilson, the son of a mole-catcher, leads to commercial competition that Gourlay has difficulty responding to.
