Originating as a proud coat of arms based on the shield of the knight of old, the emblem became a decoration on the jacket pockets of young knights on university campuses in the nineteenth century. Then it grew into an indispensable part of the sports fashions of the upper classes. But now, having broken away from campus and club, it has taken a new lease on life as a colorful decoration in the world of popular fashion.

There are many ways to enjoy wearing emblems. The most orthodox and the easiest is to decorate a blazer pocket with one of the many ready-made crests available on the market-British military or royal arms, or the crests of famous English or American universities. For something a little more interesting, it is a good idea to try some of the cur- rently popular emblems of famous brands or shops. And if even this is too prosaic, it is always possible to design your own. If doing this on an individual basis is daunting, you could have emblems for one of your clubs or groups designed and produced.

Nor is it necessary to insist on a blazer. Emblems are fun worn on other kinds of jackets and jumpers, cardigans, pullover sweaters, or ordinary shirts. American military badges are especially right for clothes of these kinds. Emblems showing famous European ski resorts are fine for ski wear. And they can be worn on the arms and back as well on the front of the garment. Combining resort or military badges with original emblems for your own group or club-the kind used on traditional blazers- adds extra appeal.

Emblems are fine on hats too. In fact, no matter where you wear them, emblems catch the eye and turn just-any-old-garment into something very special and fun to wear. Give them a try!
