This is one of the most comprehensive books about Otto Skorzeny . Glen Infield covers Skorzeny's postwar career in a manner not covered in Charles Foley's myopic Commando Extraordinary. Skorzeny is best known for his wartime exploits in service to the Third Reich. The rescue of Mussolini and the notorious infiltration of SS commandos during the Battle of the Bulge are well covered instances of Skorzeny's career, but Infield also covers Skorzeny's efforts on behalf of the Nazis before his homeland of Austria was annexed in 1938. Most important is Infield's coverage of Skorzeny's postwar career as a kind of Paladin for war criminals of the Nazi party and SS. Infield also focuses on Skorzeny's wartime terror activities against members of the Danish evangelical church. Those men of peace were up against ruthless men of violence under the command of Skorzeny. Other missions include the audacious kidnapping of the prince of Hungary when that state was wavering in its support of the Axis with the Soviets poised to invade in 1944; a failed attempt to capture Yugoslav Partizan commander Tito, as well as Skorzeny's actions to suppress the coup attempt planned for the wake of Hitler's assassination on July 20, 1944. This moment was one of the defining events in Skorzeny's life.
Whatever military use the Nazis had for Skorzeny during the war was nothing compared to his usefulness and loyalty to the underground postwar Nazi cause.
Infield follows and explains Skorzeny's trials at Dachau and his defense for using Nazi troops disguised in US uniforms, where a British SOG operator Wing Commander Forrest Yeo Thomas, himself a victim of Gestapo interrogations and a veteran of daring commando missions, cleared Skorzeny's name.
Infield also covers Skorzeny's activities with the postwar Odessa organization, first exfiltrating wanted Nazi criminals to Italy and then to Spain or Argentina. Skorzeny remarried the daughter of Nuremberg acquitted Nazi financier Hjalmar Schacht and was suspected to be in charge of bank accounts of Nazi loot used to finance postwar activities of Nazi fugitives largely in South America but also in the Middle East.
Another constant factor in Skorzeny's career was his dedication to the Nazi cause from his early party membership in Austria to seizing power from the anti-Nazi conspirators in Stauffenburg's circle to his postwar dealings with Franco and the Perons. Skorzeny was a diehard Nazi, thinking first and foremost about "getting the band back together" in South America or even, briefly, within the military and security institutions of Nasser's anti-colonial regime in Egypt in the 1950s.
This is a good overview of the career of the man once called The Most Dangerous Man in Europe. This book really captures the methods by which the Nazis were able to take their empire and their staff into a new secretive postwar phase including the names of postwar actors on behalf of Nazis in West Germany, Spain, Egypt and Argentina.
