This book by Fischer-Dieskau, the well-known singer and conductor, deals with Nietzsche's relationship to Wagner.
Nietzsche, who is 20 years younger than Fischer-Dieskau, first meets Wagner with great enthusiasm and in subordinate discipleship, and finally they agree in their love for Schopenhauer and their enthusiasm for music. Nietzsche's prehistory, his philosophical convictions at the time of his encounter with Wagner and also his adaptation to the opinions and ideas of the "Master" are considered at the beginning of the book. In the course of the book, letters, conversations, persons, historical events are collected to show how deep affection, admiration and love could eventually lead to a conflict of content, aversion and hatred that would eventually divide the friends.
Who would have known at the friendly Tribschen time, when Nietzsche even had his own room with the Wagner family (!) and was to be appointed Siegfried's guardian, Wagner's son, who could have guessed that one day icy cold and even bitter dispute could separate Nietzsche forever from Wagner's ideas and his friends?
Fischer-Dieskau shows with this great book that there is - of course - never a simple answer to such a fundamental disagreement. But he traces the course of the friendship in an interesting, entertaining manner and will very clearly illuminate which circumstances will eventually remove Nietzsche from Wagner.
A very exciting, interesting, great work. One has the feeling of holding the old letters in one's hands once more and laughs, suffers and rejoices with the characters, looks back later on a whole century and not only on two people - absolutely worth reading, historically and personally enriching.
