The Socialist Revolutionaries and the Russian Anti-War Movement assesses for the first time the programs and activities of the Socialist Revolutionary Party from the outbreak of World War I in 1914 through the February Revolution of 1917. It presents the only detailed history the revolutionary movement as a whole in the late Imperial Russian years, discussing not only the Socialist Revolutionaries (SRs) but also the Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, Social Democrats, and anarchists. Previous histories have been written on the assumption that the revolutionaries were not very active between July 1914 and February 1917 and that, by definition, the February Revolution was spontaneous. Melancon argues that the revolutionaries worked very actively against the war and the autocracy during these years and that the SRs played a significant and often leading role in the movement. Thus, in his interpretation, both in the long and short terms the revolutionaries contributed to the overthrow of the old regime in Russia. Melancon's study focuses attention on SR party policies and activities; on the role of SR leaders in the West European emigration; and on SR organizational strategies in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and other Russian cities and towns. Among Melancon's findings are that although some SRs favored the war, most opposed it, even to the point of espousing the defeat of the Russian government, and that the SRs equaled the Social Democrats in their anti-government agitation among factory workers and surpassed them among the soldiers at the front in the garrisons. The SRs were the only party to engage in propagandizing work among the peasants, although that work was limited. This study also provides the background to the carrying out of the February Revolution, with emphasis on SR activities in the capital during the final crisis of tsarism.
