Peggy van Praagh, una distinguida bailarina clásica, también maestra y productora eminente, fue Directora Artística del Ballet Australiano. Ha trabajado con la mayoría de los coreógrafos más importantes del mundo y es una reconocida autoridad en la materia.
El trabajo de Peter Brinson acerca de la historia y la estética de la coreografía le valió una Beca para continuar su Investigación del Consejo de Europa en 1960. Ha escrito y dado conferencias relativas a la coreografía para las Universidades de Oxford y Cambridge y para la Real Academia de Danzas.
Combinando su experiencia tanto académica como escénica, los autores parten de una breve historia del tema y una reseña de la coreografía contemporánea para llegar a un estudio detallado del arte en creación.
Tratan el trabajo del coreógrafo con el director artístico, el compositor y el diseñador; los temas del coreógrafo, el vocabulario de la danza, los bailarines y su instrucción; los problemas del casting y de la creación de las danzas individuales o ensambladas.
Apéndices valiosos contienen ejemplos de argumentos de ballets desde el siglo XVIII, material nuevo acerca de la danse d'école, notas referidas a la preservación del ballet y recomendaciones para la educación de coreógrafos, críticos y audiencias.
Una destacada selección de fotografías de distintas fuentes, con subtítulos bien descriptivos, completan esta edición.
