Rulers in all ages have delegated power to trusted individuals, often abused as “favourites” because they supplanted the traditional sources of advisers.
This richly illustrated collection of seventeen essays, with an Introduction and a Summary by its editors providing context, concentrates on a group of minister-favorites that emerged in the early 17th century in many European countries, exercising power by gaining the favour of a monarchs. It concentrates on the period 1550 to 1700, but with some earlier and later examples.

The general level is high. Its four sections cover the emergence of favorites, their performance in office, how they were portrayed and their decline. It concentrates on Spain, France and England, but Denmark Poland-Lithuania and the German Empire are also included. Russia is largely omitted because its favorites are from a later period.

The collection suggests that minister-favorites first flourished when the medieval pattern of rulers cooperating with councils of powerful magnates declined as power became more centralized. This increased the rulers’ responsibilities and although some, like Phillip II of Spain, attempted to deal with day-to-day administration, many juvenile, incompetent or indolent monarchs turned to a trusted aide to ease this burden. Initially, minister-favorites administered using their dependents, but they soon became publicly-paid bureaucrats with a corporate identity.
The growth of such bureaucracies in the later 17th century allowed Louis XIV to dispense with favorites as, with departmental ministers to administer routine work, he could direct government without the need for an intermediary. His example was soon followed in other countries.
