This is an amazing book .
Perhaps it is not well known because it is by a Frenchman. (The translation from French to English is excellent, by the way.). Peroncel-Hugoz is amazingly well-informed and prescient on the dangers of a rise in political Islam, seen through his perch as Le Monde's bureau chief in Cairo where he served until he was kicked out by Sadat in 1981 for his reporting.
Because the author speaks Arabic, is intimately familiar with Islam, and knows the Koran (in Arabic), he has access to a range of sources that the average Western reporter would not have, and was able to fluidly move around Egypt, North Africa, and the broader Middle East with ease and open ears. Peroncel-Hugoz's understanding of the problems of Islamic societies, the albatross that traditional Islam has on development and modernization, and the deficiencies of a traditional approach towards human rights and women, in particular, are deep and well-presented. He is also an acute observer of how outsider apologists ("professional Turks") were corrupted by politics, ignorance, and/or personal bias to mis-represent Islam. He also warns how Westerners (including the United States) are playing with fire by encourage a return to traditional Islam -- which time has show was spot on. If there was a Nobel Prize for predicting the future, he would have gotten it. For example:

"If [fundamentalist Islam] succeeds in taking control, it will probably become more terrible than the Inquisition of medieval Christendom, for it will be the government itself, a government that will let nothing escape."
