Anyone interested in the little by-ways and asides of American history will most certainly enjoy this work and come away from it not only entertained and enlightened, but also in a rather pensive state of mind when our current condition is considered.
Brooks McNamara has given us a well written, well researched and most certainly a magnificently illustrated history of the American Medicine Show. This is a long gone institution which did not have its beginning in American, as we find that there are vestiges even during medieval times, but America most certainly took the concept of selling while entertaining to new heights and refinement.

Medicine shows were a form on entertainment but entertainment for a specific purpose...to sell something, normally medicine or cures. Quackery was blatant and claims for various products outrageous. Of course this selling of medical products and fraudulent claims of their effectiveness went far beyond the traveling medicine show and was quite prevalent in print in many forms.

A great book for those interested in history of any sort. This one is about the early drummers/salesmen and their ways of hawking their wares. Contains reprints of old posters.
