An interesting look at the Gospels as a form of midrashic literature by one of the premier writers on the subject. John Shelby Spong is an Episcopal bishop who challenges the literalness of the Gospels to transform Christianity into a believable 21st Century paradigm.

Relying on secondary sources and a significant amount of first oerson research and information, Spong makes a compelling argument for the synoptic Gospels being not a history, but a midrash on the life and meaning of jesus that was designed to match and parallel the Jewish lectionary of the 1st Century CE. Using parallels, including helpful charts and background information, Spong makes a compelling case that the Gospels - both in timing and events - are a form of midrashic literature that was designed to accompany the readings of the synagouge.

Drawing numerous parallels on the Old Testament prophets as well as psalms in the second part of the book, Spong's hypothesis is that without looking at the Gospels through a Jewish lens, the meanings are completely lost in literalism. His scholarship and theories are admittedly controversial, as are his findings. However, the open minded reader will find much to ponder in his words.

No real Joseph, manger, shepherds, angels, guiding stars, or flights into Egypt...no real journey into Bethlehem by one who was great with child...no real temptation in the wilderness, sermon on the mount, raising Lazerus from the dead, miraculous feeding of the multitudes...no literal triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, betrayal of Jesus by Judas, cosmic ascension of Jesus, Pentacostal experience on wind & fire...no "in the flesh" resurrection appearances, etc, etc, etc.

A must read - and a working knowledge of Judiasm and Jewish traditions will go a long way to helping make the reading more fruitful.
