In many cultures the art of story-telling was an integral part of the transmission of history, philosophy and religion, and a source of great social entertainment. Such stories are The Keyen of Fu Tze — the wise sayings of Confucius. They present an image of the Way of Heaven, the Way that is without form and which cannot be described, and Fontenay leads the reader to feel that there is a path that slips through the logic and conditioning of the ordinary mind. But this is no eulogy of the irrational. He declares “It is only when you have taken upon yourself the difficult task of teaching yourself that you can learn from Fu Tze”.
